Kendall ended up with a good bit of cash after her birthday this year. In the past, I have just saved it for her or used it towards clothing or a need, but she is now starting to understand the concept and value of money so this year was different.
At first, Kendall wanted to just nickle and dime it away on candy and trinket type stuff. We quickly nipped that in the bud for many reasons! She started asking for certain things, but the two things at the top of her list (American Girl doll and a karaoke machine) cost more than what she had, so we decided to give her a few choices...to save her money for one of the "bigger" items later, or get her ears pierced. Well, she immediately chose getting her ears pierced.
We were all set to take her one particular Friday night...had planned to make an outing of it...until the American Girl catalog came in the mail the Wednesday before. One of Kendall's "jobs" is to check the mail so she discovered the catalog and asked if she could look at it. In the past, she's always been content with just looking because we've explained to her the expense of those dolls. This particular day, though, she says, "Hey, mom, would it be okay if I switched my mind and instead of getting my ears pierced, saved my money to buy an American Girl doll?" I told her if that's what she wanted to do, that was fine with me. She then told me she would think about it and let me know after her rest time. (How mature is that?!)
Kendall looked at her catalog through rest time that day, and when rest was over, she told me she didn't want to get her ears pierced anymore and she wanted to save her money for a doll. After talking to Evan that night, we came up with a plan to help her earn some money, then decided that instead of giving her a "want" gift at Christmas, we would wrap up money to put towards the doll.
Kendall worked HARD for this doll!!! We gave her some extra jobs around the house to earn money (folding socks, sweeping the front porch, wiping baseboards, etc) and even caught her a time or two doing the jobs without prompting. We told her if her grandparents asked her what she wanted for Christmas that it would be fine for her to tell them she was saving money to buy an American Girl Doll. Her reply was, "I am not asking them for money because it is rude to ask for money!"
Kendall ended up with enough money after Christmas to purchase her doll, plus one outfit and a hairbrush. After much "switching her mind" she finally chose the My American Girl doll that can be customized to look like her, only Kendall didn't want it to look like her...she chose dark hair, and dark eyes. Kendall has given her the name Macy. The doll came in the mail on Thursday and I promise Kendall has been brushing her hair for three days straight! We are still waiting on the gymnastics outfit to come.
So very proud of this girl's attitude and hard work! I know Macy will be a well-loved addition to our family.
